Maintenance of Certification Process for DCAS Energy Management Institute BOC Alumni
The CUNY School of Professional Studies (CUNY SPS) has oversight for the Department of Citywide Administrative Services Energy Management Institute (EMI). Building Potential (formerly the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council, or NEEC) is the the national administrator of the BOC program.
To help you understand how this process works, a few frequently asked questions are provided below.
Yes. Both Training Certificates of Completion and the Certification require annual maintenance. Level I TCOC or the BOC Certification require 5 maintenance points a year and a $75 application fee. The Level II TCOC requires 10 maintenance points and a $75 application fee. Information will be emailed and mailed to you from Building Potential (formally NEEC) the January of the year you are due for maintenance. If you maintain your Level II credential and also hold a Level I TCOC or Certification, that credential will automatically be renewed with no additional points or fees required. Your credential (TCOC or Certification) is valid for a full calendar year after you earn it.
1. Track all points earned during the renewal cycle using the Maintenance Credential Worksheet.
2. Send all proof of credential maintenance (e.g., training attended, quizzes taken, etc.) directly to Building Potential (formerly NEEC) via email at: bocinfo@theboc.info.
3. Contact the BOC Help Desk at 1-877-850-4793 or via email at bocinfo@theboc.info to confirm receipt of your information.
There are several options for earning maintenance points. Attending BOC webinars, participating in professional development classes and conferences, implementing energy savings projects at your facility, and by participation in professional associations. See the BOC Maintenance Activities & Points Earned Chart. Also, see the Maintenance Credential Worksheet to help track your points.
Continuing education requirements for credential maintenance remain the same:
- BOC Level I Training Certificate of Completion (TCOC) = 5.0 hours per year
- BOC Level II Training Certificate of Completion (TCOC) and Certified Building Operator (CBO) =10.0 hours per year
Note: Each hour earned = 1 point.
Visit the BOC web site for more information at: http://theboc.info/maintaining.html

For example, if you earned your credential in any month of 2024, your certification will expire in March of 2026 and you will need to apply for maintenance at that time. Thereafter, your maintenance application is due annually in March.
It is 120 questions, you must score 67% to pass. You will have 3 hours to take the exam. More information about the test administration rules are included in the candidate handbook.
