The NYC Department of Homeless Services, collaborating with other public agencies and nonprofit partners, works to prevent homelessness before it occurs, reduce street homelessness, and assist New Yorkers in transitioning from shelter into permanent housing. Furthermore, DHS remains committed to meeting its legal mandate to provide temporary emergency shelter to those experiencing homelessness in a safe and respectful environment.

The NYC Department of Homeless Services, in partnership with the CUNY School of Professional Studies and The Financial Clinic, is pleased to announce the launch of DHS FIN (Financial Independence Now) - a new adult financial literacy learning and coaching initiative for shelter staff.

An interactive classroom-based learning experience, DHS FIN (Financial Independence Now) will provide shelter case managers/housing specialists with practical strategies for providing “light-touch” financial coaching and referral assistance to their clients. The two-day training session will incorporate scenarios, role-play, and other learner engagement activities covering such topics as:

  • Working with clients to set financial goals,
  • Helping clients to create spending and savings plans,
  • Connecting clients to no/low cost banking services,
  • Assisting clients with reviewing credit scores and reports,
  • Sharing strategies with clients for managing credit and debt, and
  • Referring clients to free financial counseling services for more in-depth assistance.

DHS FIN will equip shelter case managers/housing specialists with customized tools that can be used in their everyday conversations with clients. These tools aim at helping clients learn the steps necessary to not only become financially secure, but to also transition into permanent housing. In addition, shelter case managers/housing specialists will have access to these resources and support after the training through their enrollment in The Financial Clinic’s online platform, Change Machine.
