DHS FIN (Financial Independence Now) Shelter Leader Session for Families with Children

Thursday, November 14, 2019
9:00 am to 4:30 pm
CUNY School of Professional Studies
119 West 31st Street, Room 407 (4th Floor)
New York, NY 10001

An interactive classroom-based learning experience, the DHS FIN (Financial Independence Now) Shelter Leader Session will provide shelter leaders with practical strategies for supervising the “light-touch” financial coaching and referral assistance that case managers/housing specialists will be trained to provide to their clients. This one-day training session will also provide an overview of such topics as how case managers/housing specialists can:

  • Work with clients to set financial goals,
  • Help clients to create spending and savings plans,
  • Connect clients to no/low cost banking services,
  • Assist clients with reviewing credit scores and reports,
  • Share strategies with clients for managing credit and debt, and
  • Refer clients to free financial counseling services for more in-depth assistance.

DHS FIN will also equip shelter case managers/housing specialists with customized tools that can be used in their everyday conversations with clients. These tools aim at helping clients learn the steps necessary to not only become financially secure, but also transition into permanent housing. In addition, shelter case managers/housing specialists will have access to these resources and support after the training through their enrollment in The Financial Clinic’s online platform, Change Machine.

If you have any questions or concerns with the registration, please contact Rebecca Brown Cesarani, Program Director, at the CUNY School of Professional Studies via email at rebecca.browncesarani@cuny.edu
